‘Modernised community centres to come up in city’:MP Pawan Bansal

Chandigarh, January 2

Local Member of Parliament, Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal today announced that city will soon come up with modernised community centres which would have all the facilities like marriage palaces. While speaking at a New Year function organised by Senior Citizens Council in Sector 38 community centre here, the MP also announced that all community centres would be provided with reading rooms specially for the elderly, where they will be able to read books and newspapers. These reading rooms would come up with financial aid of MPLAD funds.

Mr Bansal said there was need to understand the problems of senior citizens and redress them accordingly. He said those who retire from their respective jobs at the age of 58 or 60 have a lot of potential to contribute to the welfare of the society and their services should be utilised. He cited the example of teachers who he said can help in imparting education even after their retirement.

Extending his new year wishes to around 150 senior citizens present there, the MP said there was a need for better social security of the elderly. “It is the responsibility of children to take care of their parents and there are laws governing the same, but what is needed is change in mindset of the people”, he said.

Mr Bansal also announced a modern hospital in the third phase sectors to cater to the growing needs of senior citizens in these sectors.

Newly elected mayor Harphool Chand Kalyan who was also present on the occasion said it was our duty to show respect towards the elderly. He also announced no fee would be charged from senior citizens infuture for use of community centres for their welfare activities.

S.D. Kalia, President of the Senior Citizens Council also spoke on the occasion. Members of the council presented a cultural programme to mark the new year celebratins, which included songs, poetry and other performances bringing out the talent in them.
